Spring 2008 sees the release on EMI Classics of a new piano concerto by legendary rock star Jon Lord - Boom of the Tingling Strings. A founder member of rock megastars group Deep Purple, Jon Lord is a pioneer of rock/classical crossover music. His Concerto for Group and Orchestra
was recorded by Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under
Sir Malcolm Arnold, selling hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide.
Since leaving the re-formed Purple in 2002 Jon has focused on
composition, with previous works Pictured Within and Beyond the Notes released on EMI to critical acclaim.
Boom of the Tingling Strings
is for piano soloist and large symphony orchestra and the last movement
is fiendishly difficult, described in a tongue-in-cheek way by Jon as
his ‘revenge on concert pianists’, whom he has always envied for their
keyboard talents. Former EMI Debut artist Nelson Goerner rises
admirably to the challenge, moving Jon Lord ‘to tears’ at the recording
sessions with his deftness of touch and sensitivity.
